ADD - Where Are The Socks?

In the morning, do you run to your sock drawer, expecting it to be full? But you don\'t notice that because you\'ve been distracted by the things on your dresser. Five minutes later, you look again, and realize that you have to make a trip to the laundry room to get some socks. On your way back to the bedroom, you stop, get a cup of coffee, and read the front of the newspaper that caught your eye. Then, you realize that you\'re holding a ball of socks, and oh my gosh!... It\'s 8:30 and you have to be a work by 9!

This may seem simple to correct for a linear-thinking person, right? We just stop doing the newspaper and dresser things. But for those of us with attention deficit, it can be a very normal morning. We know that no matter how hard we try not to be distracted, well... there you are. That\'s what makes us ADD. Still, when you\'re trying to get the kids to school or to the office on time, you know something\'s got to change.

ADD-friendly systems are often an answer to our distraction issues. One way to curb the morning distraction problem is to set up a routine to help you. For example, pick a time in the evening when you know it won\'t disrupt watching your favorite movie or TV show or take time away from your family, or whatever. It could even be before you go to bed. At whatever time you pick, go to your bedroom and gather everything you\'ll need for the following day. Include the underwear and outer clothes you\'ll need, your shoes, your purse, your briefcase, your keys, your glasses, and even any medications that you need to take in the morning. Then, when you get up the next day, you won\'t have to wander around in an ADD-haze wondering what to do. It will all be right there.

Routines and systems are great ways to help us with our ADD issues, more times than not. Just make these unbending ritual. Set the ADD time in your brain, but until you do, set an alarm clock to remind you. Then, every day for two weeks, or even longer if necessary, keep setting that alarm and laying the things you need out for the day. Once the routine becomes part of you, you\'ll be amazed at how well it works.

Sometimes ADD distractions can be frustrating, and in the morning more exhausting. Find a workable system for yourself and let it smooth out the bumps. Once you\'ve taken the challenge and made it yours, you\'ll be amazed that you don\'t hate mornings so much anymore. Instead of being all wound up over things that you couldn\'t accomplish quicker, you\'ll be easing into your day.
