ADHD Tip - New Findings Suggest Antidepressant Medications May Not Work & The Impact On ADHD
The effectiveness of ADHD medication is quite likely one of the most highly contested and hotly debated topics among parents, professionals, and advocacy groups across the world.
There are those who argue that treating ADHD with medication is the absolute way to go, whereas there are others who will tell you that medication is entirely unnecessary.
In this case, I am not suggesting or advocating one way or the other. I purely think it is important to consider all sides of the story in order to make the best decisions for you and your child.
A new report:
There have always been reports questioning the effectiveness of medications. In fact, there are even studies that show no long-term benefit to using ADHD medications
What is more interesting is the release of a new report recently featured on ABC news. This story revealed that in 2006, more anti-depressant medications were prescribed than any other class of medication.
The shocking news was that an analysis of studies, both published and unpublished, revealed that published studies were more favorable of the effectiveness of using medications to treat depression than were unpublished studies. In fact, apparently 96% of unpublished studies showed questionable findings or no benefit at all from using anti-depressant medications.
Int their report, ABC continued to say that the results of this new analysis suggest that biased studies being published can paint an extremely misleading picture about medications.
In light of current controversies and conspiracy theories, this is an interesting news story to think about and wonder what the implications are for our children.
What does this have to do with ADHD?
While there have been no published reports or implications that we should further question the effectiveness of ADHD medications, this new story makes you wonder.
As a parent, consumer, and advocate for your child, it has to make you wonder what is going on. But above all else, I want to reinforce the importance of also relying on therapy for your child\'s ADHD symptoms. Not only can a therapist monitor your child\'s behavior and his progression, but a therapist will also work with you and your child to implement strategies that can make a difference in how they are able to interact at school, with their peers, and with others.
Again, because of the complex nature of medications and the body, I must strongly advise that you do not make any changes to your or your child\'s medications based solely on this article or any other news story without first consulting with competent, licensed medical professionals. Information is always being updated and constantly changing. This story is merely meant to provoke creative thinking about how you will approach your child\'s treatment for ADHD.
