Health insurance has become a major issue in this country. Almost every politician promises to do something about the cost of health insurance, but so far little has actually been accomplished. Until substantial reforms are in place it will simply be up to each and every one of us to do our own part in reducing the cost of our health insurance.

Fortunately there are some simple things you can do that should lower the cost of your health insurance here in Massachusetts immediately.

Start with the basics - maintain a healthy lifestyle. This means lowering your intake of junk food, cutting out most fried foods, eating fruits and vegetables and getting at least some exercise every day. Remember, exercise doesn't have to be done in a gym - simply walking around your neighborhood at a brisk pace is a good start for many people.

Cut out all cigarettes and all tobacco products such as chew. You will never get the most affordable health insurance in Massachusetts if you smoke or use chew.

The same, unfortunately, also goes for being overweight. Your Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a fancy way of talking about your weight, is one of the determining factors for how much you pay in health insurance premiums each month. The one ray of sunshine is that if you can lose even a little weight you may slip down a notch on the insurance company's BMI scale and if that happens you could save considerably on your health insurance.

Don't partake in extreme sports and don't drive a fast, sporty car.

Keep your credit rating good. The better your credit rating the better your rate on health insurance.

Pay your premiums automatically each month out of your checking account. Auto pay will save you a few dollars each and every month.

Look for group health insurance. If your place of work doesn't offer group health insurance then ask around at any clubs or groups or associations you belong to. Often an organization that you would never think of offers its members discount group health insurance.

If friends or relatives belong to any group or association that offers its members group health insurance - join.

If you own a home-based business it's possible that you could qualify for group rates even if your only employee is your spouse. But even if you can't qualify for group rates it's possible that all or a portion of your insurance premium may be tax deductible. A tax break could make your insurance much more affordable.

Can you increase you your co-payment? If you can increase your co-pay to, say, 50% you will certainly lower the cost of your health insurance. This is an especially good idea for people who do not see their doctor on a regular basis.

Can you increase your yearly deductible? Increasing your deductible will definitely lower your monthly health insurance premium, but you need to exercise caution in using this approach. Keep in mind that you will have to come up with the full amount of your deductible in cash each year before your insurance company will start paying its share of your medical expenses. You want to be careful that you do not promise to pay a larger deductible than you can actually afford to pay.

Finally it's time for you to get online and find at least 3 websites that let you compare the cost of health insurance at different insurance companies. Using some of what you have learned in this article you'll need to fill out the form on at least 3 such websites. Be certain that you put the exact same information on all three forms so that your comparisons will be valid.

Once you've done that then all that's left is for you to choose the lowest-priced policy. Getting affordable health insurance in Massachusetts really is just that easy.
