Nutrition for Hypothyroidism
Normal functioning of the body can be affected by the deficiency of thyroid hormones. The severity of symptoms vary from individual to individual, and in some cases they are mild and in some severe. Its symptoms can be fatigue, problem in walking, feeling excessive cold, depression, constipation, dry skin, stiffness or weakness in muscles and joints, increase in heart rate, short breath, increased perspiration, anxiety, insomnia, fever, agitation, abrupt menstrual cycle, tremor, swollen eyes, sudden gain of weight and general slowness. It is really hard to diagnose it, since blood tests are not enough sensitive to detect hypothyroidism, and in many cases this diseases goes unnoticed.
An individual to cure this menace should take proper and nutritious diet. The diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, skinless chicken, fish, whole grains, skinless turkey and beans. Few other useful food products which help the body resist the symptoms of this disease are kelp, garlic, seaweed, pulses, egg yolk, radishes, beetroot, oatmeal, mushrooms, bananas, watercress, brewers yeast and seafood. One must avoid the intake of food materials like raw cabbage, Soya, maize, mustard, cauliflower, pine nuts, sweet potatoes, cassava root, peanuts and millet. As these food materials contain some natural goitrogens which leads to the enlargement of the thyroid gland, and interfere in its synthesis of hormones. If an individual wants to take these food materials then they should be cooked since cooking makes the goitrogens less effective. To a certain extent the intake of sugar, sodium chloride, eggs, fats and red meat should be avoided. There are a few herbs which even aid in curbing hypothyroidism. Nettle, as a herb aids in balancing thyroid in both the cases of over and under activity. Bladderwrack also known as Fucus vesiculosus is a brown seaweed which is the store house of iodine which is quite beneficiary if an individual is suffering from hypothyroidism. Fucus vesiculosus acts like a supplement and treats hypothyroidism. Motherwort, another one of the herbs, aids in regulating the rapid heart beat. Many Chinese herbs have been proved beneficiary for treating people suffering from hypothyroidism. These herbs are safe and have no side-effects and have gained a lot of popularity in a short span of time.
A proper diet really aids in combating hypothyroidism because when we take healthy food, our immune system remains healthy and aids in combating many diseases and in overcoming many of its symptoms. If the diet of an individual is rich in B vitamin complex, manganese, multivitamins, multiminerals, vitamin C, tyrosine, kelp and iodine half of the battle is already won, as these nutrients are very essential for healthy living. Omega 3, the fatty acids aids in deflation, and also strengthens the immune system. Bromelain, another nutrient, aids in reducing the swelling. Its intake should be around 250 - 500 mg thrice a day. One of the grievous outcomes hyperthyroidism is the deficiency of magnesium. So, one must supplement the diet with magnesium so as to avoid any problem. One must be careful in charting out a diet plan especially if one is a patient of hypothyroidism, since keeping various such things in mind will help in overcome this disease.
