Nutritional Wonders - Omega 3 Eggs
A large number of medical conditions can be treated completely or ameliorated by increasing the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in our bodies. These fatty acids are also called essential acids, as they are vital for our good health. However, the human body cannot produce these fatty acids on its own and it needs to add them through proper diet or through supplements. A woman's body requires around 1100mg, while a man's body requires about 1500mgx of omega 3 fatty acids.
DHA docohexaenoic acid, EPA eicosapentoic acid, and ALA alpha- linolenic acid, are the three essential omega 3 acids. The richest sources for omega 3 are fish, especially cold water fish, and green leaf vegetables.
Nowadays, because of the benefits omega 3 fatty acids have on our health, more and more food producers include these fatty acids to aliments. Some eggs also come omega 3 enriched. Compared to a typical egg, an egg coming from a chicken which was given omega 3 foods contains many times the amounts of omega 3 oils.
The way to get omega 3 rich eggs is to change the food chicken receive in farms. They are fed flax seeds and special foods which contain insects, which are very rich natural omega 3 sources. That is why these eggs cost more than regular eggs which come from chicken fed the usual corn and soybean mix and their availability may be limited in some areas.
Food producers are concerned about adding omega 3 fatty acids to their products because consuming products which are naturally omega 3 rich is preferable to taking supplements.
However, not all effects of omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial to human health. Because one of these effects is the thinning of the blood, you may encounter problems in case of a surgery or if you are injured.
Consult with a specialist before taking any omega 3 supplements, as they can prescribe you the necessary doses or propose you some changes in your diet. He or she can advise you on whether you are allowed or not to take omega 3 supplements or change your diet if you are already taking blood thinning medication, as it can lead to excessive bleeding.
Your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on the possible side effects and possible interactions of omega 3 fatty acids with other drugs or vitamins.
