Overdosage Of Omega 3 Fish Oil - Can It Be Bad For Our Health?
We have heard a lot about health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids but what about the side-effects. Are there any harmful effects of Fish oils? Well there are but only if you consume these supplements in excess. Keep exploring the article to find out more about Overdosage of Omega 3 Fish Oil.
It is hard to believe that something as healthy as Fish oils can have a negative impact if taken in excess. But excess of anything is bad and the same rule applies to EFA supplements also.
Our body needs essential fatty acids for a variety of functions. Not only do they keep our heart and joints healthy, they also improve the functioning of our brain and nervous system.
Cold-water fatty fishes such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines and Hoki are the richest source of EPA and DHA fats. However eating fish in large amounts is no longer considered a safe practice, due to the increasing levels of pollutants in the ocean waters.
Fish oils that are molecular distilled provide all the benefits of omega 3 fats and are free from toxins such as mercury, metals and PCBs. Regular intake of EPA and DHA supplements is recommended for maintaining good health.
However the dosage of fish oil supplements varies for each individual. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 300-400mg of fish oil daily is the ideal dose for general health benefits. For heart patients and people suffering from arthritis, the dosage must be increased to 600-900mg per day.
Consuming more than the recommended dosage can have a harmful effect on your health. Overdosing of Docosahexaenoic acid can increase the insulin levels in diabetes patients and might result in excessive bleeding.
General side-effects include Fishy burps and a weird aftertaste that remains on the tongue after consuming Fish oils. This however can be dealt with, by consuming the supplements along with your meals, which will leave no after taste or distasteful burps.
Overdosage in some people results in stomach upset or cramps. Skin Rashes and acne are also noticed when omega 3 supplementation is started. These are normal side-effects that go away once the body gets used to the fatty acids.
Many Fish oil capsules contain Vitamin D and Vitamin A. While these nutrients are good for health, excess of these vitamins can result in hardening of the arteries and bone degeneration. If such conditions occur, immediately consult your doctor.
Both EPA and DHA fats have blood thinning properties that enables better blood circulation throughout the body. However if you are consuming anti-coagulant medications or have a history of bleeding disorders, you should avoid fish oil supplements and look at other options such as flaxseed oil or green leafy vegetables.
Last but not the least; make sure you purchase Pharmaceutical grade supplements with a high EPA and DHA content. Fish oils extracted from the Hoki fish have 40% higher DHA content. Hoki is a cold-water species found in New Zealand that has naturally high omega 3 levels.
Consult your health practitioner for the right dosage of EFA supplements required by your body and make sure you stick to that. Overdosage of Omega 3 Fish oil can have some serious side-effects, but avoiding them is in your hands.
