Panic Attack!

Panic attacks are caused by extreme physical sensations of intense fear resulting from the anticipation of a real or imagined threat. Panic can strike suddenly and frequently with no warning, bringing with it an overwhelming feeling of doom. Usually this condition is also accompanied by periods of excessive worry interrupted by attacks. The terror that a person experiences during a panic attack may not be related to what is happening around them and they can occur at any time, even during sleep.

In order for the condition to be diagnosed as a panic disorder the individual must experience at least four of the following symptoms intensely for about 10 minutes on average:

* Feeling that you are about to die or go \"crazy\"

* Feeling smothered and not able to breathe

* Uncontrollable shaking

* Overwhelming desire to escape

* Racing or pounding heart rate

* Excessive sweating

* Dizziness

* Intense chest pains

* Nausea

* Tingling in the extremities

Many who experience a panic attack will start to avoid people, places, and things that they associate with having a panic attack. They also may have feelings of depression or turn to alcohol and drugs in an attempt to self-medicate. Some sufferers even put restrictions their life in order to avoid attacks making them unable to enjoy a normal daily routine of grocery shopping, driving, working, or engaging in social activities.
