Productivity Means Struggle
Being productive on the job and life in general means that you will encounter struggles. How you deal with those struggles will affect your professional and personal productivity.
Working is not easy no matter how much you enjoy what you do. There are always some unexpected obstacles, some unforeseen events that affect your productivity or employee productivity. You struggle to overcome these as you move closer and closer to your desired results of maximum productivity.
Frederick Douglas understood the relationship between struggle and forward progress or what we now call productivity. He once said that The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions, yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. The conflict has been exciting, agitating, all absorbing and for the time being putting all other tumults to silence. It must do this or it does nothing.
If there is no struggle, there is not progress. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one: or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.
At the time that Frederick Douglas made these statements he was speaking of politics, but it is not also true with business and individual performances? Organizations are just a collection of individuals united to achieve a common goal. Employee productivity is born from the human condition Even though these words speak of politics, these words also speak to the human condition of potential and achievement. Douglas understood the human condition all too well. Humans need struggles or obstacle to make progress and achieve their goals.
This suggests two questions:
- \r
- What struggles are keeping you from maximum productivity? \r
- What process do you have in help you overcome these necessary struggles? \r
As you look to improve the productivity of your greatest asset your human capital, then you must be able to answer these questions if you truly want maximum productivity.
