Stop Stressing and Start Spoiling
Stressed? Sore? Burnt out?
The solution may be a bit simpler than you\'d imagined - even if you do feel a little bit self-indulgent.
If you\'re looking to:
- Alleviate stress
- Speed up muscle recovery
- Minimize soreness and
- Eradicate pain \r
...then deep tissue massage (aka \"sports massage\") might be EXACTLY what the doctor ordered.
Thanks to an increased awareness of the benefits of massage, and easier (more affordable) access to licensed massage therapists, if you haven\'t already recognized your need for a little kneading, you\'re rapidly running out of excuses...
Once you make it past the initial guilt of self-indulgence, it becomes a lot easier to figure out why massage can become such an essential ingredient to your training schedule.
Working out a lot (especially if you favor high intensity training) can and does put a tremendous amount of stress on your body. And whether you realize it or not, all of that stress has to go somewhere. It would be insane to think all of that stress will leave your muscles unscathed.
The Dangers of Overdoing It...
Stress can compromise your body\'s ability to eliminate toxins. When overworked muscles can\'t get rid of those poisons, they can congeal and form a hard knot or nodule (sometimes known as a \"trigger point\", making it incredibly difficult to contract properly OR effectively.)
Since it\'s virtually impossible to completely eradicate stress, you have to get in there and deal with those trigger points manually.
Essentially, your masseuse rubs, kneads and prods those nodules, breaking them down and clearing the way for a fresh supply of blood to flow through.
Wondering how often you should indulge yourself? Ultimately, your \"final answer\" will depend on how much free time you have and how much money you can safely invest in your indulgences. But, as a general rule, you should shoot for at least one full session a month. Waiting any longer between visits means that at the beginning of each session, you\'ll essentially be starting from scratch, and ultimately missing out on deep tissue massage\'s cumulative benefits.
Additionally, when you go is just as important as how often you go. For optimal results, invest in a full, all-out massage several days before your next big event. Ten, on the day of the event, head in for a quick pre-competition rubdown.
Not only will this help out in the relaxation department by alleviating stress, it\'ll also promote ample muscle blood-flow - meaning you\'ll waste LESS of your energy during your warm-up.
Massage is also great for speeding up the recovery process after competitions or unusually high intensity training. Scheduling an appointment with your masseuse within a four day window will assist in repairing tiny muscle tears.
When it comes down to it, massage isn\'t really self-indulgent extravagance; it\'s much needed maintenance and repair. Before you know it, you\'ll be hitting those weights harder and you\'ll have the results to show for it.
