Student Health Insurance Ins and Outs

When it's time to go off to college there are a lot of details to attend to. One of the things that tends to get left out during this time is that college students need student health insurance. For many their attention is on paying tuition, and text books, and finding your way around on campus. Then once the semester is underway your focus is consumed with studying. With all of this going on it's easy to see why student health insurance is one things that gets left out. It's just not a top of mind kind of thing until you need it.

Under some health insurance plans if you're a student and under a certain age your coverage may be allowed to continue under your parents health insurance policy. If this is the case it is an ideal solution until you reach whatever that age maximum is.

One thing to remember when searching for student health insurance is colleges offer insurance plans to their students as well. In fact students often simply select or accept the plan offered by the university without giving it much thought. The University will also often have a clinic for it's students. This leads students to erroneously assume that they can get all their healthcare needs met at the on campus health center.

What these students don't realize is that the school's insurance coverage is often quite limited. Very few schools have a clinic that is open around the clock, and if you need medical care in the middle of the night, you're only option is a trip to an emergency room.

Another thing you'll want to keep in mind when you simply go with your university's health insurance plan is that, except for the head doctors, the staff at your school's clinic are students just like you. They can give you antibiotics for your cold, but they clearly arent able to handle major medical problems or emergencies. This means it's very likely you'll have to seek medical attention outside of your coverage should an issue more serious the flu arise. Again bringing with it larger health care expenses.

Going to the emergency room with no insurance will definitely cost you more than taking out a good medical plan. For young, perfectly students there are more and better options available.

One option is to understand that while your college or university does indeed offer the regular insurance that comes with your tuition, generally for just a little extra, most schools also offer a group plan to students. It will probably work a lot like an employee health insurance plan and offer the usual coverage's you would expect.

You should ask the same questions that you would ask about any other insurance plan when considering this supplemental insurance. These questions might include:

- How much are premiums and deductibles?
- Is there a yearly maximum payout?
- Which doctors can I see?
- What is and is not covered?
- Another important question to have answered is does the insurance plan cover me when I am traveling?

Many insurance companies offer discounted student health insurance however your school's policy will probably be the least expensive. As long as it gives you full coverage and you are satisfied with the offer you'll probably find it really is the best deal.
