Autism, though a familiar word, still remains a mystery for doctors and researchers aiming to delve deeper into the world of Medicine, in order to find some kind of cure for this disorder. Though autism symptoms show up at an early age, tackling and treating children with autism can be a challenging job, especially if the child displays a severe degree of the developmental disorder.

Children with this condition find it very difficult to adjust to society and conform to the so-called 'norms' of social behavior. They often cannot express themselves or their problems, so that complicates the whole issue of treatment and therapy.

Some children with autism even tend to go through immensely silent or immensely violent spells, which makes it hell for both the sufferer and the concerned family members.

Autistic children merely see the presence of people as objects in their environment. They do not know how to communicate with them or reach out to them. By and large, these children are indifferent, if not completely oblivious, of their environment. So they do not realize the value of family bonds and friendships.

So how does one tackle these children afflicted with autism?

Educational institutions

The first step is to educate the entire society on the issue. It is especially important for the parents to know what they are dealing with and how to treat their child's problems. This education process becomes the responsibility of the schools and teachers. The United States has a counseling center in each of its district schools, which help parents and family of autism victims deal with their crisis.

It is also the responsibility of these schools to arrange meetings with the parents, teachers and specialists and chalk out a systematic strategy for helping the challenged child.

The experts should evaluate the severity of the condition and then decide what kind of academic education would help him best with his current limitations. Along with this information, they should work out a reward-for-action strategy that would teach the children proper behavior with the help of simple strategies of classical conditioning.

Educational institutions should take on the responsibility of supporting the families of children affected with autism. They should also conduct periodical programs for parents on tackling their autistic child.

Parents

The parents of autistic children should immediately consult a professional if they notice that something is drastically different with their child's behavior.

They should regularly follow up with the therapist and heed his advice on how to proceed ahead treating the autistic child.

They could even network with other families who are suffering a similar fate. Additionally, they could also refer to library books, surf the Internet and learn more about the subject.

Government

The government plays an equally important role in support children with autism and their families.

Setting up many centers of service for autistic children, helping them and their parents cope with the problem, providing funding for long-lasting treatment and therapy sessions is one other thing the government can and should involve itself with.

Media

The media plays a vital role in educating people about this condition, tell them how it can be treated and help raise money for the victims of this condition.

Conclusion

Autism is a rapidly growing social problem and so, it has to be tackled by the society as a whole. If the society should put its hands together, it can work very effectively to help children with autism.
