Until recently, heart disease was the number #1 killer in the US. Although it is no longer #1 (cancer now is), heart disease still kills tens of thousands of people in the US every year.

This article will shed some light on the benefits of omega-3 as an anticoagulant and how it may be helpful as a daily dietary supplement to people with heart disease or as a preventative measure to avoid heart disease.

Many people, because of TV propaganda, are taking aspirin or a prescription drug as an anticoagulant to help thin the blood to prevent heart attacks. If the blood becomes too sticky, it may have a more difficult time flowing through arteries....thus increasing the likelihood of triggering a heart attack.

It's not my place to criticize aspirin or prescription anticoagulants. If you are on them, don't stop unless you talk to your doctor. I personally wouldn't take them. One risk is that long term aspirin use may cause intestinal and stomach ulcers. Aspirin may literally corrode the lining of the intestines and the stomach, eventually causing internal wounds, such as ulcers and potential bleeding.

Natural sources are believed to be safer, such as the herb ginkgo biloba, or better yet omega-3. Omega-3, unlike aspirin or prescription drugs, is not unnatural. Omega-3's are essential fats, which should be consumed as part of anyone's healthy diet. We are evolved to consume them. They naturally occur in foods such as grassfed meats, eggs, fish, nuts and seeds.

Fatty fish, and purified fish oil supplements, are the best sources of omega-3 fats. So, if you want to get the benefits of omega-3 as an anticoagulant, take a high quality fish oil supplement.

However, just keep in mind, if you are already taking a blood thinner, such as aspirin, or a prescription drug, you should talk to your doctor before adding fish oil/omega 3 supplements.

I always find it ironic when people claim natural supplements are dangerous because they can interact unfavorably with prescription drugs. Nobody ever says the opposite: that maybe it's the prescription drugs that are dangerous because they interact unfavorably with natural substances we are supposed to eat!

In any case, omega-3 supplements such as fish oil have many other cardiovascular benefits that warrant their use as part of an overall health protocol. So, don't take them just for the anticoagulant benefits, but all their myriad of benefits for the human body.
