The Facts on Probiotics
Probiotics are what we like to call the "friendly" bacteria. Present in the digestive tract and vagina, probiotics are live microbial organisms that are considered to be beneficial to your body. Often sold as healthy food supplements, people are taking beneficial bacteria for many reasons. Considered to promote good overall healthy, they suppress the growth of potentially harmful bacteria that can hinder your immune function. They also enhance the protective barrier of the digestive tract, and help to produce the crucial Vitamin K for your body.
Once you have ingested the bacteria, they work to settle your intestines as well as other parts of your body. They sustain themselves, working towards bringing your body to better health, until they are destroyed by antibiotics or other factors. You can immediately see some of the benefits of probiotics. They can help with something mundane such as diarrhea caused by bacteria, and they can also help with something much more serious such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. From lactose intolerance to colon cancer prevention, probiotics have been proven to help your digestive tract and your intestines. There is no recommended amount of them that you need to take, but it is important that you consider taking them on a daily basis.
You can add probiotic supplements to your diet through a capsule, liquid, tablet, or powder depending on your preference. They can be found in many health food stores, as well as grocery stores, and of course online. If you rather eat your probiotics you can find them in many cultured dairy products such as yogurt. You do have to be careful though as the amount of probiotics tend to differ in various products. Probitoics certainly aren't new, but they are bringing to light how much healthier you can be by taking a probiotic supplement.
