With spring exhausted we now complete a turn of the 4 elements on our zodiac wheel as the Sun transits into the cardinal water sign Cancer. Over the past month, mutable airy Gemini left us intellectually stirred. The personal and reflective element of water grants human nature the ability to emit emotions. Governed by the Moon, Cancer leads us off into summer, as all leadership signs upon the wheel initiate a new season.

Cancer builds upon the paternal qualities established by Taurus through their watery natures. The ideas of the Universal Womb and the Mother Principle come into play. Protective of all those around them including themselves, their symbol of the Crab is a perfect analogy. Cancer is hard on the outside, while on the inside they have a soft, sensitive core. A crab holds on tight to something till they are ready to let it go, and likewise for a Cancer soul, especially in the emotional department.

Being the Moon naturally controls over the tides, this makes most Cancers deeply connected to and fond of the ocean. The Moon takes one month to pass through the entire zodiac, only spending 2 to 3 days in each of the 12 signs. Hence why Cancers are known to exhibit moody natures, with our ever-changing tides and speed of the Moons orbit through the Zodiac.

The Cancer nature is cautious, gregarious, shrewd, tenacious, nurturing, history-oriented, and are often found romanticizing about the past. The Moons influence lends to being typically well adept in the kitchen, and many of the worlds greatest chefs are Cancers or influenced by a numerical 2 vibration (also governed by the Moon). Our crabs fancy all aspects of the home and family, where they are most at peace. Their challenges in life involve cultivating logic, emotional stability, and a healthy imagination.

Summer initiates amidst our 2nd Mercury Retrograde period of 2007. Perfect timing for the luxuries of summer, to be indulged by RElaxing, REnewing, REflecting, you know, all those REs while the Messenger planet is asking the collective to REgroup! As Mercury transit back through Cancer, time spent clearing the mind and blocked emotions will allow energies to reap colorful and imaginative results once it goes direct upon 7/9.

Uranus joins the outer planets Retrograde activity in the sign of Pisces upon 6/23 until 11/24. We now spend our summer months ahead with Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all in backward motion. The Retrograde energy of Uranus in sympathetic and dreamy Pisces asks the collective to reassess its definition of materialism; ideally taking this period to gravitate to humble acts in the spirit of self-sacrifice. No doubt the world at large will see its fair share of unexpected occurrences that urges the reaction of compassion.

As Mars enters Taurus 6/24 until 8/7, drives on the collective become fixed in an earthen energy that is controlled, patient and calm. This marks the summer of practicality coupled with our outer planets retrograde activity. Look to the Taurus ruled house in the birth chart to see where persistence and determination is best applied in the life on an individual level.
